Some practice

An bhfuil an doras oscailte?

Sílim go bhfuil an doras oscailte, faoi láthair.

Go díreach! An mbeidh tú fuar nuair(?) / a bhfuil (?) an doras oscailte?

(Not sure about that last sentence!)

Níl aon nua keyboard

In spite of the many wonderful features of the 1.1.1 iPhone update, there is no international keyboard setting that I can find. :-(

Banking problems

I translated this story from Lá Nua roughly as follows:

Consumers with the Brittany bank, Northern Rock, outside the branch in Dublin yesterday (and?) worried that they would lose the money that is deposited by them in the bank.
There are about 25,000 customers of Northern Rock in Ireland and about 2.3 billion Euro deposited there.
Up to 2.7 billion Euro was withdrawn from Northern Rock over the weekend after it was noticed that emergency loans were gotten at the bank from the Bank of England. The bank lost over 50% of its value from this past Friday, time to have certified the lending/borrowing/loan.

Very unsure about that last sentence/phrase! :-)

Tomhaltóirí de chuid an bhainc Bhriotanaigh, Northern Rock, lasmuigh de bhrainse i mBaile Átha Cliath inné agus imní orthu go gcaillfidh siad an t-airgead atá i dtaisce acu sa bhanc.
Tá thart ar 25,000 tomhaltóir ag Northern Rock in Éirinn agus thart ar E2.3bn i dtaisce acu.
Baineadh suas le E2.7bn ó Northern Rock thar an deireadh seachtaine tar éis gur fógraíodh go raibh iasachtaí éigeandála faighte ag an mbanc ó Bhanc Shasana.
Chaill an banc os cionn 50% dá luach ó bhí Dé hAoine seo caite ann, am a deimhníodh an iasacht.

Mo rothar

Bhímuid ag rotharocht(?!) inné timpeall trí lachanna. Bhí an aimsir go híontach; bhí an grian lonrach, 's bhí sé te ach ní raibh sé an-te.

We were bicycling yesterday around three lakes. The weather was wonderful; the sun was shining, & it was warm but not too warm.

D'ith muid ag an bialann aréir

D'ith muid ag an bialann 'Greek' aréir. Bhí an bia 's an (t?)seirbhís an-mhaith. Ba mhaith linn ag dul ansin arís.

Chomh maith le sin

"Chomh maith le sin" is the latest phrase I've noticed popping up on podcasts that I've been listening to. "As well as that" is what I think it translates to.

Mo dhaltaí

Tá mé [impressed] le mo dhaltaí! Tá cúigear daltaí i mo rang Dé Deardaoin. Tá bhur [bpronunciation] níos fearr anois. Is maith an scéal é sin!

I am impressed with my students! There are five students in my class [study group, actually] on Wednesday. They're pronunciation is much better now. That's good news!

Scissor Sisters

Chuaigh muid go dtí an concert 'Scissor Sisters' aréir. Tá fios agat a gceol[?] "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"--bhí sé sa clár teleifís "No Béarla", Episode 3, nuair a bhí Manchán ag rince.

English Translation:

We went to the Scissor Sisters concert last night (actually, the night before last). You know their music[song?] "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"--it was in the television show "No Béarla", Episode 3, when Manchán was dancing.

Gabh mo leithscéal

Gabh mo leithscéal.

I haven't written here in a while--six months to be precise. Last fall and this winter have seen, well, "interesting" times in my life. Things are settling down now, and I hope to update this blog (and visit others' blogs) more frequently.

We'll see. :-) Feiceann muid (feicimuid?).

An scéal (corrected)

Go raibh maith agat a Chionaoidh for his corrections. This looks much better:

Is mo scéal féin an b(h)lag seo.

Tá mé ag obair anois, mar atá mé ag scríobh é seo.

Níl leabhar gramadaí agam in éineacht liom, mar ligigí liom na hearráidí go léir, le bhur dtoil.
